Kate`s Wood is situated just to the north and east of Kirriemuir. It is reputed that "Kate" was executed at this place in the 17th century accused of practicing witchcraft. Ive heard it said that the spot where the deed was perpetrated is,to this day,devoid of vegetation.
This small oil painting aims at capturing the stillness of the woods after a heavy fall of snow.There is no direct sunlight in this scene which is unusual for my work but the dark shapes of the trees and the ambient light reflecting off the lying snow provide much of interest. Indeed I think that this composition merits a second, much larger version sometime in the future..
