In the Paintings and other Work section you can see a smaller preparatory version of this composition. You`ll notice that in this second version of the painting some cloud has wafted around the mountain - a piece of artistic licence which for me greatly enhances the atmosphere and composition this picture.The mountain, Dreish, takes the form of a gigantic lop-sided pyramid from this vantage point. Note that it`s shape and disposition are not symmetrical -which would be too static;boring.I love the lead-in to the painting; a cloud`s shadow darkens the flat, glacial floor of the glen intensifying the luminosity of the sunlit areas of this vista.
Now framed in a dark-toned frame enhancing the effect of sunlight in the work,I have to say that this is,for me, a really satisfying painting...at last !
