A classic Angus scene. People often point up the influence of James McIntosh Patrick in my work. Yes. Whist our working methods are radically different, Patrick`s enthusiasm for "contre jour" viewpoints has been a great influence in my work. Contre jour simply means looking directly towards the sunlight and here, in this view from Meams Hill, I`m trying to use the glare of the morning sun and the shadows that it casts to evoke the feeling of a Winter`s morning.
Meams Hill is just to the north of Kirriemuir and is effectively on the southern edge of Highland Scotland. In days gone by such hills would have been strategically advantageous and indeed, the ancient remnants of a fortified settlement are to be found up here.
