Born 1965
1990 Graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee with a B.A.(Hons.) in Fine Art and was awarded the Pat Holmes Memorial Prize for Drawing.
'Jonathan was hailed as one of the most exciting young landscape artists of his generation, with his work popular with both individual buyers and private collectors. McIntosh Patrick in particular reckoned his work was outstanding, and he was described as a natural successor to the Dundee-born painter of the natural world.'*
Jonathan lives in the Angus countryside and works as a full time artist.
He has had exhibitions at The Pittenweem Arts Festival, St. Andrews Old Course Hotel and the Eduardo Alessandro Studios, Broughty Ferry.
In 1994 he was commissioned by distillers Matthew Gloag and Sons to produce 7 paintings depicting the "Open Championship" golf courses. These were published as prints and distributed nationwide to promote the firm's sponsorship of the Championship.
Jonathan's work is included in private and corporate collections in the U.K. and in Hong Kong, the U.S.A., Canada and Malta.
Although his landscapes-many inspired by his Angus surroundings-are beautiful and realistic evocations of places he loves and regularly visits, there is, literally, more to them than meets the eye. He sees his painting very much as an evolving craft, not the creation of pretty pictures, but almost as portraits of their subject, with an immensely strong sense of place. When you look at a Jonathan Mitchell, you get not only something that catches and pleases the eye but also captures a moment that meant something individual to the painter but that also manages to speak to others who look on it.'*
